Mr. Kinshi Ito, a class mate, sent me an e-mail as follows:
Commemorating the day of November 11, 1999 (The year of 1999 is Heisei 11 in Japanese era and the month of November is eleventh month of year. So we can express the day as 11-11-11. This is quite a lucky number for Japanese.) there are two memorial events by railways.
(1)JR Yokosuka Line
The 113 series of trains on Yokosuka-Sobu line of JR East Japan
ended their service today. Trains of the series were on service
for 36 years from 1963, transporting many commuters and students
(including me.) The Yokosuka line service between Ohfuna and Yokosuka
is 111 years old, So they planned a special train 'Memorial' with
a formation of 11 units of coaches and its rear end coach carries
a registered number 'KuHa 111・1111.' It left Ohfuna station at
11:11.
The blue and cream body color of the trains was very familiar with railway fans, being called as 'Suka color'( Ref: Yomiuri Shimbun November 7th Morning edition.)
(2)Yokohama City Subway
Yokohama City Subway opened a service on August 29, 1999 after
a half year from March 10, 1999 when the subway extended it service
to the underground of Shonandai station of Odakyu Enoshima line
together with Sotetsu line. I who lives at Shonandi felt 'Yokohama
became nearer to us'
Yokohama city transportation office issued
a Memorial ticket for celebrating the day of November 11th. They
sold the 11 tickets as a pack of 200 yen tickets at 2,000 yen
at eleven stations between Shonandai station and Azamino station.
Tickets are effective a month.
I left my home at 6 in the morning and arrived at Shonandai station
6: 18. I was able to buy the tickets. A friend of mine, a railway
mania, told me "The tickets might be sold out. Because many
railway fans will make a waiting line for purchasing them."
Although I thought it might happen, no line at all. I was rather
disappointed.
