A friend of mine called me and asked me if he could do some repair works on my broken amplifier which was reported on the diary yesterday, Immediately I accepted his proposal.
A few years ago when the test broadcasting of hi-vision was not yet started, I was with an Executive Vice President of N company in charge of technological development (I call him as K in this article) and an executive manager of NTT at the same round table of a luncheon meeting, K took an opposite seat of me and a man from NTT was at my left side. I told them as far as the transfer of hi-vision was made on analog it might not work well. It would be better to change it to digital, I said. At the very moment. K replied in a laud voice that there was absolutely no need to change it to digital. The analog transfer was quite enough, he repeated (he showed unpleasantness on his face because an outsider made comments on his works.) The manager from NTT followed him. As their choice has been proved to be a big mistake through today, the government made a decision to change it to digital recently. They tried to spread hi-vision braodcasting technology globally, but no country in the world accepted to have it due to the miss choice of transfer.
K knew that the digital transfer was better because he was an engineer specified in this field, I believe. But I presume he was obliged to say so because the preparations for production of Hi-vision receivers started already. He might not be able to agree with the comments for changing it due to his responsibility at the company. I think he did not say the truth at the time. Afterwards we observed not a few cases when engineers said lies at their critical moments. K faded away a few years ago. I happened to meet a man from N company on a returning trans-Pacific flight. I told him the above story. He said K was respected by his subordinates because he was always thinking of them. I imagine that he also thought of the company and he acted to oppress the outside opinions against company's policy or its benfits.
When NHK started a test broadcast of BS TV, I was one of the first ones to receive it. I was excited with a wonderful quality of music of its b-mode stereo (These day NHK broadcasted many classical musics.) As I thought the sound quality of hi-vision was the same as of BS, I bought it earlier. Immediately I was disappointed with its sound quality, far inferior to BS sounds and bad quality of built-in speakers of hi-vision set. I have not looked at it except sports events.
I happened to find out on a magazine that hi-vision has four channels of sounds. It wrote that to listen them perfectly was to have a center speaker on front and rear right and left speakers adding to front right and left speakers. Consulting with an audio store, I added those speakers and an amplifier for driving these speakers shown in the bottom pictures. The hi-vision at my home sounds better and I could enjoy sumo or football games with presence.
As you know, two units of main amplifier were broken and it takes time to repair them, I set the above said new amplifier as a main amplifier of my audio system on Saturday last week. Then the balance of sounds from all speakers became much better and I could enjoy sports events with reality,
The digitalization of hi-vision transfer is expected to bring sounds in better quality.
