10/23/99

The Subscription Concert of NHK Symphony Orchestra was held this evening. The insects were singing around NHK Hall. Although it was dark, I could feel that autumn was there.

Originally the concert was scheduled to have Wagner conducted by Holst Stein, Honorary Conductor of the orchestra. Because of his illness, Jiff Kout (born in Czechoslovak 1926) replaced him to conduct the orchestra to play Dovofak Symphony No. 8 instead of Wagner. Takahiro Sonoda (born 1928) played piano of Brahms/Piano Concert No. 2 as scheduled but with Kout. Maestro Sonoda attracted listeners by playing with his unchanged passions for piano. Kout accompanied him quite well. Dovofak, his favorite, was energetic and beautiful.

Maestro Stein was used to conduct the orchestra lightly with a potbelly. I am afraid that his physical conditions might be a cause of ill. I pray for his earliest recovery. Maestro Sonoda looks very healthy. I suppose he is doing some exercises for keeping him fit and young. He is one of very few Japanese pianists accepted as Maestro globally. I expect him to play good piano as long as possible.
