It was hot in Tokyo just the same as it was yesterday. After two o'clock I drove up to Hakone on an exodus from hot Tokyo. On the way, it was 36 degrees when passing through Atsugi Interchange.
|
It was 35 degrees through Gotemba where the temperature was 31 degrees. Just after I drove through Otome-path tunnel, it dropped down to 27 degrees. The view of Mt. Fuji from Otome-path was magnificent today. |
|
It was fine at Sengokuhara with comfortable breeze. The difference of temperature between Tokyo and Sengokuhara was only about 7-8 degrees, But its effects on human being was quite big.
The evening edition of Nikkei August 16th reported that percentage of top executives who are used to the internet in Japan was rated as the lowest among the world economic powers.

The left table shows percentage of top executives who have good command of internet (Source: Anderson Consulting. Reported by the evening edition of Nikkei August 16th). Those who answered "Yes"to a question hDo you utilize the internet without having resistance to it?" were rated as good. |
In 1996 when I made a trip to U.S.A. carrying an IBM 530, a laptop PC, I could not connect it to an access point in New York from my room at one of the best hotels there. I could not connect my PC to telephone line from a office of top executive of a big company. But from hotel rooms in California I could access to internet and was able to send/receive e-mails. I thought state of California was something different from the others because Silicon Valley was in the state. Immediately after that, the internet system spread though the nation rapidly. When I made a drive trip through western states in summer 1998, I could connect my PC to access points not only at big hotels in Las Vegas but from motels in small villages in desert. I do not think there was a big time gap between U.S.A. and Japan when the internet was put on public use. But even today, it is difficult in Japan to find hotels where internet connection service is available. Once people recognized the internet was indispensable in U.S.A. to business, not only companies but individuals have been making efforts to have the internet systems at the earliest occasion.
The top executives are able to operate the internet themselves with good understanding of internet usefulness. I can communicate these top executives through e-mails. I am able to have latest information about global economy at anywhere and at anytime as far as I am on the earth. The ability of utilizing the internet is indispensable to top executives. The above survey result about Japan indicates that Japan is being outmaneuvered by the world level competitors of which business speed is becoming faster everyday.
Some people might say the best measure for overcoming such a delay is to replace old top executives who could not understand the internet by young competent people. Do you agree with such an opinion?
In fact among top executives in U.S.A., there are many who cannot operate the internet themselves but have competent secretaries who understand the internet and are experts for searching data on internet. But most of them are being replaced by young competent persons. There are a few top executives who have such secretaries in Japan. The results of hiring such persons depend on how deeply the executives understand the internet. So the best measure would be the replacement of the older generation by the younger one.
