According to a news letter by the Minatoku House Supply Agency which was delivered this morning with newspapers, the population there has started to increase again after March, 1996, even though it decreased sharply during and after the bubble. There are two areas where it increased significantly, Odaiba and Mita Gochome Street. As Odaiba has been developed along the New Metropolis Project, the increase of population there is understandable. But I wonders why it in Mita Gochome Street increased so much.

The left map shows a whole territory of Minatoku. The white area shows the streets where they found no increase nor decrease. The cold colored areas are subject to decrease, while warm colored areas are to increase. The darkest colored areas are Odaiba and Mita Gochome. The next to them is Mita Yonchome where I live. According to the news letter, the construction of subway lines such as Line No.12, Loop Line of North-South Line and Annexed Line of Mita Line will be completed in the year of 2000. People is speculating that the transportation there will be remarkably improved and starts to move in the areas. |
A big and luxurious mansion was built in my neighbors recently. And many people moved in. A large scale food store was built, even though a few convenient stores had been operating. So the area has become a bit flourishing. When the subway lines mentioned in the above is completed, people in Mita Yonchome can enjoy the new transportation as well as the old one, Asakusa Line.
A police man visited my home with a leaflet below. He said many snatch bags happened in our area with a map indicating places and times of such criminals.
| We had been told by the police authority that little criminals happened years in our area. So when I heard the series of snatch bags happened in our area, I was surprised. The increase of number of criminals might not be helped in propotion to the population growth. |

After dark I took a walk to Mita street where Keio University, one of the best private university in Japan, located. The construction for widening the steet was underway. A big but old furniture store was gone. The new pencil buildings (tall but narrow buildings) were being built. A few new stores were opened. But bookstores or computer stores, indispensable to universities, were not found yet. I could not feel any academic atomospher in the street. By observing from the outside of university, the site for university was so narrow that number of students who were studying here was limited and that the most of them were at the branch schools located not in Mita.
The illuminated Tokyo Tower could be seen top to bottom from the street.
