| The subscriotion concert of NHK symphony orchestra today was conducted by Maestro Wolfgang Sawallisch after months with Gerhard Oppitz piano. They played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.3 and Schubert's Mass No. 5. At the very moment when Oppitz started to play piano, I felt I became forty years younger. While he was playing, I tried to find a pianist, whom his play resembled. When the concert finished, I realized the pianist was Wilhelm Kempff. |

He proved himself that he was the successor of German music. The Maestro coducted the orchestra sitting on a chair. So that I was afraid he became a bit weak physically. He did not turn back to the pianist and never tried to have an eye on the solorist. Perhaps they played together frequently so that they understood each other perfectly. They need not to communicate each other with eyes. Incidentally, an introductory article about Mr. Opptitz printed in today's booklet of concerto menu was very poor. It was a mere excerpt of a music company's homepage. It did not tell nothing about his music. But it missed to tell that his wife was a Japanese, perhaps because of the wording limit for printing.
| The Maestro conducted Schubert, standing on the pondium as usual. Uwe Heilmann tenor, canceled his performance becasue of illness. Tetsuya Mochizuki (the right picture) of Niki-kai substituted for him very well. The Niki-kai chorus was a highlight of this evening. I think it was the best in Japan. But I wish to have wider voices for male chorus. How about to add foreigners to their chorus members! |
