Mr. Ichiro Kitano, a classmate in Kobe, mailed me a short essay with beautiful pictures on his latest sight-seeing trip to Europe. As the mail was transferred from his Mac to my Windows, a few unexpected troubles happened. But by today, we have almost overcome the troubles. So I will put his essay on this diary, dividing them two or three days:

Romantic Trip in Europe (Part 1)

                            Ichiro Kitano

In late June, 2002, I made a romantic trip to Europe, escaping from Japan in rainy season.

Boat Cruise on Rhine River
I enjoyed two hour cruise on Rhine river from Mainz to Koblenz. As the river goes down 1300 km from Switzerland to Netherlands, I saw only a part of it. Along the river, the boat was passing by red roof residences, churches, old castles on green hills successively. Ref. bottom pictures (1) and (2).

When the boat approached Laurelei, the tune of Laurelei came out from speakers on boat.. (Remarks; Mr. Kitano inserted here a poet written by Heinrich Heine.) Laurelei was a mere rock which was not unusual, contrary to my expectation. Ref. bottom left picture (3).

Heidelberg
Its population is 130.000, 30,000 among them are students. While I was young, I yearned for the city. The Heidelberg Castle on a hill has been utilized as a prison or as a board for students. It lies neglected now. Ref. the above rifht picture (4). A castle for Friedrich IV, next to the ruined castle, was well kept and beautiful. Ref. the bottom picture (5). When I was watching Necker river, the memory of my youth was coming back. I crooned the Alt-Heidelberg written by Wilhelm Meyer Forster. Ref. right bottom picture (6).
