I was very happy as there was no hospital today. I got up rather earlier than usual like pupils and took a morning walk. It was perfectly fine morning with no wind. On my way back, I dropped in a convenient store and found food staff shelves were almost empty. But its sales staff behaved himself as it was not surprise to him. The first food deliver to shop in early morning are breads and cakes made by bakeries. By ten o'clock, almost all food staffs become available, he said.

As the weather was good, ‚h decided to go up to Hakone in late afternoon. Before that, I tried to recover the delay of English edition of my diary. But just on three o'clock in afternoon, the Imperial Household Agency reported on TV that Princess Masako gave birth to a girl safely. After the announcement. I sat at the front of TV and watched the special programs about the Prince and Princess broadcasted by all major TV stations.

Princess Masako is beautiful and wise. She loves children and has tender hearts. She is a good house wife, who cares her family. She is also perfect as the princess. The imperial family has been loved mostly by middle aged women. I think the youngsters of both sexes started to adore her and it is a good chance for the family to regain their popularity among the whole Japanese. Congratulation on having a baby!

On TV, no one said that every person disappointed a bit because the baby was not boy. I expect them to make challenges to get the second and third children now on.

The Imperial House Act which prescribed only a male descendant can succeed to the Imperial Throne was executed in Meiji era. Without such a provision, the imperial throne has been maintained for the longest among world monarchies. Although it is a very sensitive problem, the move for abolition or change of the provision will be studied quietly, I expect.

As it became very cold in evening. I gave up the idea for going to Hakone.
