Among the various pre-events of Tokyo Motor Show, a GM's press@meeting was one of the most outstanding events. I think it is helpful to modernize the way of press conferences made by Japanese manufacturers.
A certain group of mass media has been given traditionally the privilege from news resources to know news earlier than others. However, a GM's press meeting held on October 23 has neglected the said tradition and invited all major mass media including auto industry news agencies. Up to now, news through industry news agencies is delayed a day compared the privileged news media. But this time, GM's announcement was reported by all news media at the same time (at the next morning.) The readers can get comments on news not only by general reporters but by specialized reporters at the same time.
In spite of terrorism attack, the top executives from the headquarters in U.S.A. joined the meeting. Three other presidents of GM alliance group joined the meeting.
All four companies exhibit their experimental models on which they are now working on. They were shown only to reporters who attended the meeting today. They are were not announced to public at the motor show.
Mr. Wagoner, president and CEO, introduced himself the new Chevrolet e-cruse on the stage. Thus he demonstrated that he is a good and competent salesman. Every president of GM group presented not only new products but also their concept vehicles. Mr. Osamu Suzuki, president of Suzuki (72 years old,) explained earnestly about his dream car in details.
There were enough time for Q and A. Even after the meeting was finished, these executive did not leave the meeting room to answer the remaining questions from reporters in detail.
I hope this style of press meeting will be adopted by the efforts of both mass media and manufactures in Japan.
