I saw Mr. Gore's speech on CNN in live which began from 11:00 am., Japan time, this morning after the Federal Supreme Court denied a plea from Mr. Gore for insisting legality of hand counting in Florida of the Presidential Election votes. He said he did not admit the decision of the Supreme Court but he celebrated the victory of Mr. Bush and also admitted his defeat. He looked deeply troubled but with a few humors, he made very good and impressive speech. I think he succeeded in keeping his political life even after this defeat. Mr. Bush's speech, which was made one hour after, lacked high spirit of victory and he dared not to say any critical matter at all. I felt maturity of American democracy as no riot between supporters of both parties or from minorities has been reported. The biggest aim of their speech is to transfer to a new regime quietly without any trouble, I presume.

Today, December 14th, is the day of festival for Forty-Seven Loyal Retainers at Sengakuji Temple. In afternoon when I visited the temple very near to my home, I met a long sham procession of forty seven retainers who came from Kira's house at Honjo Fukagawa (I have been here for years but it was the first time to see such a procession.) A newspaper reported a few days ago in its column, a documentary evidence which supports that the Tsunayoshi's Shogunate government's attitude toward their planned revenge against Kira was to guide them to their success because it would be regain the popularity of Shogunate government. Otherwise they, forty seven armed warriors would never be able to get together at the front gate of Kira house after midnight. When I saw the today's procession, I thought it might be true.
