Sharp, a manufacturer of BS Digital Broadcast Adapter installed at my home sent a service man this morning from its Jonan Factory Service Station. He came to my home and added a new software to the adapter. Although I have no idea how many sets of adapter have been sold to consumers already, it would not be easy task for the manufacturer to send serviceman to each home of individual customers. It was my first experience that I received such a service from electronics product manufacturers. I was rather surprised.

After the BS digital TV broadcasts start formally on December 1, this year, each of stations including NHK will ask their audience to download vanities of soft specialized only to each of stations. The added software system is to react the such demands from stations.

I asked problems about my adapter to the service man. He replied my questions and taught me how to deal with them.

The main switch of BS Digital Adapter's Remote Control became unworkable. He said it might be caused by renewal of its batteries. When I remove the batteries from the remote control case, all memories I set in it were faded away. I experienced the same problems on my digital cameras. The problem might be one of the weakest points of these electronics products. When I reset from the very beginning, the function of remote control is restored.

The connection of BS digital adapter to telephone line was not needed during test broadcast period. But now on, the adapter has to get downloaded the system soft from TV stations through telephone line. It took a little time to fix it. He put a forked socket to analog line from ISDN modem and then everything is solved. Of course I cannot use the analog line simultaneously for both PC and TV. Only one of them is workable at one time. But it is no problem for actual use.

I think the speed of communication is the most important from now on. Even if these stations developed fine software, they might be useless when the transfer speed is low, I am afraid.

Now I wait the day of inauguration of BS digital broadcasts with a perfect machine and also its perfect installation due to their efforts. I hope they will send varieties of good classical music.
